DIY Cardamom Sandalwood Hair Oil | Easy Fall Recipe
Fall has a way of changing the little routines along with the weather.
The air turns cooler, sweaters come back into rotation, and after months of sun, heat, and summer styling, the ends of your hair may start looking like they could use a little extra attention.
That is where this DIY Cardamom + Sandalwood Hair Oil comes in.
Cardamom brings a warm, aromatic spice, while sandalwood adds a smooth woody note underneath it. Together, they create a rich fall fragrance without becoming overly sweet or heavy.
The recipe itself stays wonderfully simple. Jojoba oil and argan oil create a lightweight base that can be smoothed over the mid-lengths and ends of the hair, while just a few drops of fragrance give the finished oil its seasonal scent.
No complicated hair treatment.
No long ingredient list.
Just an easy homemade hair oil you can mix in a few minutes and keep right beside the rest of your fall hair-care favorites.
What You’re Making
You are making DIY Cardamom + Sandalwood Hair Oil, a simple leave-on oil for smoothing a small amount through the mid-lengths and ends of the hair.
Jojoba oil keeps the blend light, while argan oil adds a little richness. Cardamom and Sandalwood Fragrance Oils give the finished hair oil a warm, softly spiced scent that feels especially fitting once cooler weather arrives.
This recipe makes about one 1-ounce bottle.

Supplies
What You’ll Need
Small glass bowl or cup
Measuring spoons
Spoon or stirring stick
Clean dropper or small funnel
One clean, dry 1-ounce bottle with a dropper or treatment pump
Label or marker
Clean towel
Ingredients
For one bottle, use:
1 tablespoon Jojoba Oil
2 3/4 teaspoons Argan Oil
3 drops leave-on-hair-safe Cardamom Fragrance Oil
3 drops leave-on-hair-safe Sandalwood Fragrance Oil
If you already have a Cardamom + Sandalwood Fragrance Oil that your supplier specifically approves for leave-on hair products, you can use about 6 drops total instead.
The fragrance is intentionally kept light. Always check the usage directions for the exact fragrance oil you have, and if your supplier recommends a lower amount for leave-on hair products, use less.
You can also leave the fragrance out completely and make a simple unscented jojoba and argan hair oil.
Make Sure
Use fragrance oils specifically approved by the supplier for leave-on hair products. A fragrance being suitable for candles, soap, or a rinse-off hair product does not automatically mean it belongs in a leave-on hair oil.
Keep your tools and bottle clean and completely dry, and do not add water to this recipe. We are keeping this one as a simple oil blend, so there is no need for fresh herbs, spices, or other kitchen ingredients.
That includes cardamom pods.
They can sit beautifully beside the finished bottle for the fall photograph.
They do not need to move in.
Instructions
Start with a clean, dry workspace and clean tools.
Make sure your hair oil bottle is completely dry.
Pour 1 tablespoon Jojoba Oil into your small bowl or cup.
Add 2 3/4 teaspoons Argan Oil.
Add 3 drops Cardamom Fragrance Oil.
Add 3 drops Sandalwood Fragrance Oil.
Stir slowly until everything is evenly blended.
Transfer the finished hair oil into your bottle using a clean dropper or small funnel.
Insert the dropper or treatment pump.
Close the bottle tightly.
Wipe the outside of the bottle clean.
Label it Cardamom + Sandalwood Hair Oil and add the date you made it.
You can use your DIY hair oil right away.
There is nothing to melt, nothing to cool, and nothing to wait for. Once the oils are blended and bottled, the recipe is finished.
Five minutes.
One little bottle.
That is the kind of fall DIY we like.
How to Use It
Start with 1 or 2 drops of Cardamom + Sandalwood Hair Oil and rub the oil between your palms. Lightly smooth it over the mid-lengths and ends of dry or slightly damp hair, concentrating on the areas that need a little extra polish.
The trick with hair oil is starting small. You can always add another drop, but once you have applied too much, the situation becomes significantly more interesting.
Fine or short hair may need only one drop. Longer, thicker, curly, or textured hair may prefer a little more.
Use the smallest amount that gives your hair the finish you want without leaving it looking oily.
This particular recipe is meant for the lengths and ends of the hair, rather than as a scalp treatment.
It also works nicely as the last little step after styling. Warm a drop between your palms, lightly smooth it over the ends, and you are done.
Parlor Scent Lab Notes
Cardamom + Sandalwood should smell warm, smooth, woody, and softly spiced. The cardamom brings the aromatic warmth first, while sandalwood settles underneath it with a softer woody finish.
Neither note should become overpowering. Too much cardamom can make the blend feel sharp, while too much sandalwood can make it heavier than we want for a light hair oil.
The finished fragrance should stay subtle and close to the hair. You may notice it when your hair moves or when you bring the ends closer, but this is not meant to behave like a perfume.
What makes this combination especially nice for fall is that it does not need vanilla or a sugary note to make it feel seasonal. Cardamom supplies the warmth, while sandalwood gives the blend depth and smoothness.
Think cooler air, soft sweater sleeves, freshly styled hair, and a little trace of warm fragrance moving with you as the day goes on.
That is where Cardamom + Sandalwood belongs.
Scent Strength
This DIY recipe uses 3 drops Cardamom Fragrance Oil and 3 drops Sandalwood Fragrance Oil, for 6 drops total fragrance.
That small amount is intentional.
Hair oil is a leave-on product, and the fragrance should stay light. Do not automatically add more because you want the bottle to smell stronger.
Always follow the leave-on hair usage directions supplied with your exact fragrance oils. If either fragrance needs to be used at a lower amount, reduce the number of drops.
And remember that once the oil is spread through the hair, even a light fragrance can become easier to notice as your hair moves.
We want a little Cardamom + Sandalwood drifting by.
Not arriving five minutes before you do.
Storage + Safety
Store your DIY Cardamom + Sandalwood Hair Oil in a cool, dry place with the bottle tightly closed. A vanity drawer, hair-care basket, or bathroom cabinet away from heavy steam makes a good home for it.
Keep water out of the bottle and use clean, dry hands when applying the oil. If you are using a dropper, try not to touch the dropper directly to wet hair or skin before placing it back inside the bottle.
Use only fragrance oils approved for leave-on hair products, and follow the usage directions from the supplier of the exact fragrances you purchased.
Keep the oil away from the eyes and mouth, and avoid applying it to broken or irritated skin. Stop using it if you notice redness, itching, burning, or other discomfort.
Keep the bottle out of reach of children and pets. If the oil develops an unusual smell, appearance, or texture, discard it and make a fresh bottle.
And make sure that cap is tight before the bottle goes into a travel bag.
Hair oil through the ends is lovely.
Hair oil through everything you packed is less charming.
A Warm Finish for Fall Hair
There is something about cooler weather that makes woods and spice feel right again. The lighter fragrances of summer begin giving way to warmer notes, and even a simple hair-care routine can take on a little bit of the season.
DIY Cardamom + Sandalwood Hair Oil fits easily into that change. The jojoba and argan oils keep the recipe simple, while cardamom adds aromatic warmth and sandalwood gives the fragrance its smooth woody finish.
Warm a drop or two between your palms and run it lightly through the ends after styling or whenever your hair needs a little finishing touch. It takes less than a minute, but sometimes those are the little routines that end up becoming part of the season.
And if the bottle eventually earns a permanent place beside your brush or on the vanity?
She has done her job.
